CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Happy Tourist

She blocked the number. She didn’t respond to Principal Harris. The only person allowed to speak to her was Josh.

“So when you coming back?”

“Why you acting like you miss me? You don’t even know me.”

“I told you. I’ve taken you to work like twenty times. Stop playing with me.”

She liked his sense of humor. She liked that he was consistent. But so was Lucian—at first.

“You sure you’re single?”

“I thought you just wanted to be friends?”

She could hear him grin over the phone. “I do. I’m not ready to be in a relationship. But I just don’t want any surprises.”

“Don’t worry about that. Just hurry up and come home.”

He was sweet. But come home to what? Lucian and his pregnant wife stalking her? Her being fired for assault. Landry?

It had been a week and her Aunt Belle took her every place but her childhood home. She repeated the same excuses.

“This is a busy season for them. They just don’t have the time yet to show us around.”

Happy couldn’t imagine the horror that must have occurred in that house for her aunt to sell it and then act like it didn’t exist. She couldn’t blame her. Going to Landry’s house was very triggering. She wanted nothing to do with it. She would burn it down if Landry wasn’t still living in it. She gave up asking and decided to give her fake cousin Darren the opportunity to hang out with her. Besides, she was getting bored and tired of Aunt Belle avoiding her questions about her own family. She either was too young to remember or just didn’t know. She figured her aunt to be a little strange. Even a little witchy. She collected crystals and had a meditation area in her bedroom. She burned oils and sticks and read books about healing yourself with your hands. She told Happy that she had some dark times in her life and these rituals helped. Happy humored her. There was a difference between her aunt and Landry. Landry drank her pain away, while her aunt prayed with rocks and stick.

Look who’s winning.

Darren told her he’d come by at 3 o’clock to show her the fun parts of town. She threw on a navy-blue chiffon beach cami with a V-neck collar and spaghetti straps. She pulled her braids up into a big swirly bun to relieve herself from the stinging Vineyard heat. No makeup; she glanced at her reflection in the mirror and threw herself a kiss.

She heard Darren’s deep, annoying voice from the kitchen and grabbed her red purse. She should be used to his voice. He was in the house almost every day.

Darren blinked feverishly when he saw her. “You look nice. You going on a date?” He laughed at himself.

Darren was wearing faded denim jeans and a collared light blue polo shirt with a pair of black Nikes on his feet. Happy felt overdressed.

“No. I’m going on a wack tourist adventure with a plumber.” She laughed louder.

“I see y’all getting along well.
